Managed Colocation vs. Dedicated Server Hosting
Web hosting can be done in different ways, offering different levels of control and cost for the end user. For users who are well versed in the theory of web hosting and require a good deal of control, eventually reduced the choices to manage dedicated servers, colocation and hosting.
Managed dedicated servers allow a client to lease an entire server to itself. The customer gets the full control on this server, and is responsible for all changes made to it - administrative, relating to security, hardware, software, operating system and so on. Some hosting providers offer dedicated support for the operating system and applications, but this is rare.
Colocation services, however, provide exterior maintenance and service for a server but the server must be purchased. The hardware and software configurations are determined by the customer, and host colocation merely provides the space to keep a constant Internet connection, power supplies and cooling, fire protection and such plants. Clearly, this gives the client total control on the server. However, it is also the most expensive.
This is a point by point comparison of the merits and disadvantages of dedicated server and colocation hosting:
1. Control. A dedicated account is owned by the hosting company, and all the hardware is controlled by them. Instead, the server colocation hosting is owned by the customer. This gives you full control over client hardware and software, leaving only the upkeep and maintenance in the hands of the host colocation.
2. The initial investment. A server colocation needs to be bought. This is a much larger initial cost of the payment made to a dedicated server host.
3. Recurrent costs. A server colocation can be left as it was for some years after purchase. However, the update server colocation automatically increase its cost far exceeds that of any lease dedicated server.
4. Availability hosting. These days, colocation landlords are increasingly switching to dedicated servers, as these are much more profitable for them.
Colocation hosting, thanks to its high installation cost, but relatively low maintenance, is more popular among companies that need huge databases.
Telecommunications companies, corporate giants and electronic businesses are more likely to use these services. For them, the dollars add up to rent saved a considerable sum.
For most home users and small businesses, dedicated servers become the path of choice in web hosting. Dedicated servers are the added advantage that the hosting company is responsible for maintaining the hardware. Yet, you have to have the car full of themselves - that prevents viruses or malware attacks on other users of the system impact. This is one of the biggest advantages of a dedicated server is shared hosting or Virtual Private Server.
From here, it is clear that managed dedicated servers and colocation hosting both have advantages and disadvantages - there is no winner or loser between the two. The choice should be made according to requirements and budget - whichever you choose, you can not go too bad ....
